ONE.

Happy First Birthday to our silly, sweet, snuggly little Bear! The past 12 months have been the best months of our lives and we are so excited to see what fun year #2 will bring. You are our greatest accomplishment and we can't imagine life without you in it; the joy you bring us each day is immeasurable. God truly blessed us on this day 1 year ago. We love you, Bear Clayton.

A Quick, Happy Hello

Things have been crazy around here the past week(s), preparing for Bear's first birthday and a house full of company. We could not be more excited for all the fun this weekend's gonna bring! Family, friends, food, CELEBRATION...it doesn't get much better. Except that I'm going to bawl like a baby (ironically) at Bear's party. Mommas out there...you get it.

The weather is finally cool in Houston and we are in heaven. Hello fall! So nice to see you again.

Sneak peek at Bear's first birthday timeline banner!

Hope your week has been full of all kinds of wonderful fall things like pumpkin spice lattes and fuzzy toe socks. Oh wait, am I the only one that still owns a pair of those? Oops.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Best A&M Game Ever!

Those of you that know me know that I didn't go to Texas A&M; I'm what you call an "Aggie by marriage". I went to a small school in Lubbock, Lubbock Christian University, but Zach went to A&M and that makes me an Aggie for life, too. Apparently.

There is definitely a sweet spot in my heart for Aggie football, mostly because Zach and I's first date was to an A&M football game. He had season tickets long before we met, so we've continued the tradition and had such a fun time taking Bear to all the home games this season. Saturday was the last home game this year, so it was bittersweet, but we made the most of it. The Aggies won, so that helped the "sweet" aspect.

And, I touched Johnny Football's hand. Doesn't excite you? That's okay. I went absolutely, teenage-girl-crazy nuts over it. That's all I could talk about the entire game. Johnny would throw a touchdown pass: "He only did that because he touched my hand". Johnny would stand on the sidelines: "He's standing there, thinking about how he touched my hand". Zach had the biggest smile on his face; I think he's proud that I now love the Aggies enough to be obsessed with their quarterback. Bear slept through the entire third quarter in Zach's lap...he wasn't impressed.

A few memories of the game:

The infamous spot where Johnny touched my hand. He was the very last player to come through the Spirit Line, and I held my hand out just in time to give him a good luck hand shake. Think it worked!

We went on the field after the game and spotted Gerard Johnson, a past quarterback for A&M. Zach handed Bear to him and said "Hey Gerard, can you still hold a football?". Gerard smiled and said, "I think so! Let's hope I don't fumble". He was so sweet! Bear, again, wasn't too impressed.

We also found Dr. R Bowen Loftin, the president of A&M. He was really sweet, too! He asked lots of questions about Bear, and of course hopes he'll be a fightin' Texas Aggie class of 2034.

Again, unimpressed. What does it take to "wow" you, Mr. Bear? Oh yeah, Snickers bars. That does it every time.

Hope you are having a great week!! We are busy preparing for Bear's first birthday party this Saturday. Get ready for picture/recap overload!

Breastfeeding: The First Year

Let me preface this post by saying that I, in no way, am a breastfeeding expert. Far from it. I'm merely a mom that's nursed her son successfully for 11 1/2 months. It has been a very tough journey at times, as I expected it would be, and there are several things I wish I had known about the process prior to Bear's birth. I'm typically not a "let's be all crazy open about a sometimes controversial subject", but I've come to realize that breastfeeding is a natural, normal part of life and shouldn't be swept under the rug. If my unsolicited advice can help one momma, it will have been worth my time (precious baby-napping time too, might I add).

Some things I wish I had known:

1. They may try to make you pump/supplement in the hospital.

I know this is often not the case; many of my friends' jaws dropped when I told them that our nurses in the hospital tried forcing the pump on me. I was so frustrated, not understanding why it was necessary. Their reasoning? Bear hadn't had a "pee" diaper yet, just several of the lovely other kind, and we needed to pump fluids in him. Not necessary. Bear was completely fine. I didn't feel comfortable pumping yet and so I didn't, and I'm happy I stuck with that choice. Moral of the story? You are the one who gets to decide how you feed your baby. Whether you choose formula, breastfeeding, pump to bottle feeding, or any combination of the three...it is your choice. Mommy knows best.

2. You are going to cry. And feel overwhelmed. It's okay, it happens to all of us.

Breakdowns will happen. If you're like me, there will be quite a few. Just ask Zach. The last thing you want to do is let those breakdowns negatively affect the way you feed and bond with your baby. They're little humans; they pick up and sense when Mommy's upset. So many times in the first month, I got overwhelmingly frustrated and cried while nursing. Bear couldn't get latched, or he'd keep pulling off, and I just continued to cry and show my frustration. It absolutely did.not.help. Zach would hold my hand and try and help me relax; only when I calmed down and stopped crying did Bear finally get a good latch and calm down, too. It's okay, and completely normal, to cry and get upset when things just don't seem to be working. Just try and remember that your little one's frustration will only increase when you're upset. Keep that chin up! Baby knows what to do.

3. Just call a lactation specialist.

When Bear was 2 months old, he was a healthy, chubby baby boy. Proof:

I, however, was still freaking out that he wasn't "getting enough". He had bad reflux and would projectile vomit often, scaring me to death and leaving me panic-stricken. Ohhhh, our poor pediatrician. She saw lots of us those first few months. Anyway, I freaked out anytime he would refuse to nurse. Zach finally talked me into calling a lactation specialist to come to our house and give me peace of mind. Best decision we ever made (other than having Bear, of course). Yes, she only stayed 45 minutes and charged $95, but I still swear it's the best $95 we've ever spent. She watched me nurse, gave pointers, and helped me figure out the dreaded breast pump that I'd been putting off using for 2 months. She gave me confidence and praised our nursing routine, something I so desperately needed to hear. Point of the story: If you're having self-doubt or worrying yourself silly, call a specialist. You never even have to get off the couch and you'll feel a huge weight lifted once you get a second opinion from an expert.

4. Teeth are not that bad.

Prior to Bear's first teeth coming in, I had this major fear of a little vampire baby that would grow teeth and bite me like crazy. Luckily, it wasn't that bad. Bear's first 2 teeth came in around 6 months and for about a week, I can't lie, it hurt a little. When he bit down, it hurt a lot. But I would pull him off immediately and sternly say "No". Did he get it? Nah. He smiled and thought it was funny. Many moms use the "thump" method...thumping the baby firmly on the head to get them to stop biting. I just couldn't do it. After several times of the "No" approach, Bear caught on and stopped biting. I got used to the feeling of teeth, and now it's no issue. He has 7, almost 8 teeth and we're still smooth sailin'!

5. The so-called "bonding" is a real, magical thing.

I've heard tons of breastfeeding advocates preach on the "bonding" nursing creates, and will openly admit that I have rolled my eyes on numerous occasion. But, having witnessed it now myself, I no longer question the reality of momma/baby bonding during breastfeeding. It is very real and unexplainable, something that I wish every momma could experience. In the beginning, for about the first 5 months, I didn't really feel it. That sounds terrible, but I spent most of my time while nursing just worrying if Bear was getting enough, and not really enjoying the moment. After 6 months, we had it down. Now he'll pull off, look up at me and smile the sweetest little smile, then go back to eating. It totally melts me every time. I love and cherish the time he nurses, especially because I realize there's not much of that precious time left. Soon he'll be asking for juice, and mommy's milk will be a thing of the past. There's something so magical about being the sole nutritional provider for your baby. He needs you. And you need him.

--------------------------------------------------

I could go on and on about the things I've learned over the past year, but I'd need a much longer nap-time for that. It's also important to mention that I in no way have a problem with formula or mothers that choose to go another route. Breastfeeding does not work for everyone and is not best in every situation. If I had had to go back to work, I'm not sure I could've continued down this route. Fairly certain I couldn't have, actually. I despised pumping and have a strong admiration for moms that work and pump to provide for their babies. But I'm blessed that I've been able stay home with Bear and that we have shared something sweeter than I ever imagined it could be. Just feeding my baby? Yes, I'm doing that. But I'm also giving us both something irreplaceable, a bond that I'll hold dear for the rest of my life.

It hasn't been easy. But, if I could go back, I wouldn't change a thing. I got mastitis when Bear was 8 weeks old and spent an entire Saturday hopping from clinic to clinic. I cried at least 27 different times in the first 2 weeks when I thought I wasn't "doing it right". I tried 58 different nursing positions before finding "the one". I carried my Boppy everywhere I went for 3 months and got 937 "you are a crazy person" looks. And still, I wouldn't change a thing. I'm so thankful that God blessed me with a precious, healthy little boy and has allowed me to be his Mommy through all the ups and downs (mostly ups) over the past 11 1/2 months. I'm also grateful for my supportive, loving husband that has stood by my side through all the tears and frustration. Zach, you are my rock. Bear is blessed to have you as his Daddy.

Mommas,
You got this. Baby trusts you. Use that trust to find confidence within yourself. You were made to be a Mommy. There is no sweeter, more fulfilling job.

11 Months

Our sweet, squirmy Little Man is officially 11 (and 1/2) months old!

This was taken right before he dove head-first off the chair.

Height and Weight are unknown; we'll find out in a couple weeks at the one month check-up.

Things to Remember:
-You started walking just before you turned eleven months!!!!! I think you took your first official steps (4 in a row) 5 or 6 days before turning 11 months old. We were SO proud! You started really walking, like a big boy, about a week and a half after those first steps.
-For several weeks, you were sleeping like a champ at night. 9pm-8am straight almost religiously. Theeeeen teething kicked in and we've had some hiccups. You've been up during the night several times lately and are up at 6-6:30am almost every morning. I blame it on the time change! And, of course, dumb teething.
-You are in size 12-18 month clothes and have been for several months. You are also still in size 4 diapers.
-Your favorite TV show is still Yo Gabba Gabba but you also love Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and "Baby TV".
-Your favorite food is pizza (wonder where you get that from?!) and anything with bananas....except actual bananas. You spit them out! But banana bread? Banana pouches (pureed banana)? Banana pudding? You love it all.
-Your favorite place to be is outside. You are totally mesmerized when outdoors and love watching the squirrels in our backyard.
-You took your first trip to the zoo this month! We had so much fun and can't wait to go back. You stared those animals down; especially the bears ;).
-Your very favorite time of day is when Daddy gets home. He picks you up, turns the record player on Johnny Cash, and dances you around the living room. You laugh the biggest belly laughs and are in complete heaven. Mommy's in heaven just watching.
-You can say "Mama" (actually referring to me!!), "Dada", and "Ba"(ball)...Ba just started tonight! We are so excited to start expanding your vocabulary :).
-You became a dancin' fool over the past month. Anytime music plays, you stop whatever you're doing and start swaying side to side. Pretty much the cutest thing ever.

-----------------------------------

I'm in total disbelief that our baby will be one year old in a few short weeks. It just can't be possible! Here's hoping the next two weeks are the longest ever. Although, I am pretty excited for Bear's birthday party :).

Hope you are having a wonderful week!

Bear's First Halloween

I'm not sure how to even begin this post because Bear's first Halloween was absolutely perfect. You know when you hype something up and prepare for weeks, just to be let down and end up disappointed? This was completely the opposite. We had the absolute best, most special day and I went to bed last night with a happy heart and full (of candy) tummy.

I promised myself before Bear was born to strive to be the most festive mommy I could possibly be....and yesterday was definitely a test of that goal. Is there a Halloween Vacation movie? If not, they could've filmed us yesterday and it totally would've been worthy. We were all kinds of crazy festive. And wouldn't have it any other way.

It all started with Bear's first coloring book on Halloween Eve. He loved it! He carried his crayons and masterpiece (with a little help from Mommy) all over the house.

Halloween breakfast= Jack o Lantern Eggo's

After breakfast and a nap, we headed to Bear's playgroup's big Halloween party. We had such a great time!

Ready for the biggest news of all? This little Peter Pan won FIRST PLACE in the costume contest! There were about 40 precious babies, so it was a big honor. It was also Bear's first cash prize :).

It's hard work being a winner.

I dressed up as Tiger Lily...a simple, ten minute costume. It was so much fun being Bear's wingman!

Once Zach got home from work, it was time to trick or treat. We just hit up a few houses on our street and hurried home to greet trick or treaters and hand out candy, which ended up being Peter Pan's favorite part.

jack 'o Lantern pizza for supper

pumpkin pie for dessert

Peter Pan had lots of fun rummaging through his goodies. We kept finding him digging in his candy bucket. Several of his friends came over and helped pass out candy; they had fun seeing all the other kids in costume and trying to steal each other's candy.

I just can't explain how happy this day made me. Holidays are so much more fun with a little one! It's bittersweet though, because yesterday was also Bear's last "first" holiday. That just can't be possible! Time needs to take a big fat chill pill and slooooow down.

Hope your Halloween was the most special, spooky one yet!!!

1st Birthday Invitation

Bear's first birthday party is just over two weeks away (his actual birthday is Nov. 18), and invitations went out last week. I'm no graphic designer, at all, so I'm proud to say I designed the invitations almost all by myself (with a little lot of help from Z)!

Bear's party is vintage storybook themed, "1ce up on a time". Can't wait until after the party to share the other details with you! Actually, yes, I can wait. I will be a sobbing mess the day this baby turns one.

please excuse the blurring...for Mr. Bear's safety :)

Happy Halloween Eve!
